Why “The Well-Shaped Oar”?

Teiresias said to Odysseus: take your well-shaped oar to where men know nothing of the sea…they will mistake it for a winnow fan. Plant it in the ground for them to see. So many readers think that Odysseus’ return to Ithaca was the end of the story. He is the hero returning from his journey with a boon, in his case oral story; in my case essays and poems.
