Explaining the Sky

Science once sat perched on my shoulder, one eye
winking at my goosey-loosey theology, a hapless
mimicry of pure reason, a mere mud pie
squished into form by a pilgrim child, mad and mapless
in America where nowadays, every father of a four-year-old
can consult cyberspace, ask the Wizard, Dot Edu, to explain
the sky. But, what ear cannot hear and the heart cannot hold
of heaven’s mystery and hope’s refrain
makes Hypothesis stumble and Theory collapse
until God, moonlighting as a shutterbug, snaps
flashes of grace amidst blind, cold scientific quest
and draws young Science close to suckle at His breast.
